‘Muriel doesn’t like aristocrats and there’s a great scene where she tells upper-crust passenger Lady Manton she’s awful, ignorant and pathetic. Maria plays lawyer’s wife Muriel Batley, another strong, no-nonsense woman.

Maria has certainly made herself heard when it comes to Julian Fellowes, the series creator, who has cast her as a key character in his next TV epic, Titanic, a £10 million production due on ITV early next year to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the disastrous maiden voyage of the doomed liner. Yet this was a period in history when women were struggling to be heard.’ ‘That’s one of the best things about Downton, that there are so many strong female characters in it. She still has a tremendous hold over him and she’s going to use it. Vera and John clearly had a very close bond at one stage, and she can push his buttons easily. Did something happen? Of course he has a history of drinking too. He wondered why they didn’t have children. They’re both fiery and she seems to bring out that side of him.
‘I think when they originally got together they were very much in love and probably quite a passionate couple.
‘They have a long and eventful history that will unravel itself in time,’ says Maria, 47. 'There’s also a pair of nail scissors on there too, but I’m not entirely sure why.’ Actress Phyllis Logan says, ‘I normally say, “I can’t possibly tell you, or I might have to kill you.” But I can tell you – it’s actually the key to the sherry cupboard, the most important key of them all!
